SSC & HSC aspirants to Pass exam need 20% in Written & 35% total

According to the new regulation formulated the State Government has made mandatory for the SSC & HSC candidates to get at least 20% in written exam and have an aggregate of 35% as passing percentage. The new criteria will be applicable to Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) exams going to held in February-March 2016 but for class 9 and class 11 it will take affect from the academic year beginning in June 2015.

In the current policy students need an aggregate of 35% marks both including written and practical exams to get passed. As the written exams of SSC & HSC are assessed by the board while the practical’s are assessed by the schools and colleges and they mark students generously in the practical’s which leads students to pass exams who even performed poor in their written exams.

Gangadhar Mahamane, Chairman of the State Board said the State Government has recently passed the orders and schools and colleges will soon receive the circulars. He further told that the board proposed to keep 25% as minimum passing percentage in written exams but the state government lowered it to 20%.

The rule has been formulated in following the footsteps of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). In CBSE 25% marks in written exams of class 9 and 33% in class 10 to class 12 are obligatory for students to pass the exam, though they also have many concessions for the students.

In view of the academicians this new criteria will be dangerous and will increase the number of failing students as the conditions will make it tougher for students to clear exams and results will be affected. Also in 2012 a similar rule was passed for class 9 and class 11 students to score 25% marks in written exams in Maths and Science subjects but then the rule was withdrawn because students were unable to pass the exams.
